Taiwanese laptop and smartphone-maker Asus is looking to double its market share in mobile phones in India, by 2016. New offerings across various price brackets, along with premiumisation, is likely to give it the much-needed fillip.

Incidentally, India is amongst the top global markets for the smart-phone maker. The company started selling its smart-phones in the country in 2014.

Current strategy

According to Peter Chang, Regional Head (South Asia) and Country Manager (System Business Group), Asus India, the Rs. 10,000-15,000 price bracket will be its sweet spots, while new launches – scheduled August onwards – will also start competing across high-end segments, such as Rs. 20,000 and upwards.

Asus at present sells 2,00,000 smartphones per month, which it intends to double to 4,00,000 a month within December.

Its market share stands at 2.5 per cent; which will be pushed up to 5 per cent during this period. “Focus on the Rs. 10,000-15,000 range will continue and we will ramp up this portfolio. Asus will also compete strongly in the premium-end. This will give us the scope to double both our market share and sales (in India) within this year,” he told BusinessLine .

The products – launched across different price segments – are said to be “new generation devices” (with high-end specifications). At least four new smartphone models are set to be made available soon (as new generation devices).

Mid-range dominates

As per a report from analyst firm CyberMedia Research, 23.6 million smartphones were sold in the first three months (January-March) of this year. Of these, the higher price-band phones ( Rs. 10,000-15,000) were more popular than budget ones. This means most brands are pitching for mid-range phones as the market grows flat.

The average selling price (ASP) was Rs. 12,983 in the quarter, while it stood at Rs. 10,364 in Q1 last year, indicating a year-on-year rise.

“There is a change coming in the Indian market. Over a period of time it will mature with the average selling price going up,” Chang said. Asus’ ASP stands at around Rs. 11,000.

Growth in laptop sales

Interestingly, Asus is also betting on high-end offerings in the laptop PC segment to see through an overall slump in market conditions. The company is betting on high functionality and specification-heavy devices, targeting gamers.

The laptops targeting gamers are priced at a premium (because of their high specs) ranging between Rs. 70,000 and Rs. 200,000.

Asus launched its standalone store targeting gamers (one that focuses on selling these high spec devices) – Republic of Gamers – in Kolkata on Friday. It is looking to add four more stores across the country by the end of this year.

“Now the first device to connect to an Internet is not a laptop; it is a smartphone. So one has to judge the functionality (of a laptop) and how it will target end users. Gaming gives us a good opportunity which we are targeting,” Chang said.

Other competitors have also forayed into the segment where Asus claims to have a 30 per cent market share.

Sources say gaming in India accounts for just 1 per cent of the global market, with 2,000-3,000 such high-end devices being sold every month.

Cisco steps up India investments

Global networking major Cisco, which has set aside a corpus of $280 million for funding early stage start-ups in India, has invested in Kolkata-based Videonetics Technology Pvt Ltd, a video surveillance firm that designs, develops and provides ultra-modern surveillance products integrated with video analytics software.

While the amount invested remains undisclosed, Cisco typically acquires an 18-20 per cent stake in every start-up that it invests in. In an earlier interaction with BusinessLine, Joydeep Bose, Managing Director of Cisco Investments – Asia Pacific Japan (APJ), had said the company typically makes investments ranging from $800,000 to $15 million in a start-up.

Confirming the investment in Videonetics, Alok Bardiya, Country Head (Investments and M&A), Cisco Systems India , told BusinessLine that a second investment has also been closed in a start-up that works on IoT (Internet of Things) solutions for Smart Cities, an area that Cisco is heavily focused on to grow its India revenues.

Revenue milestone

Last year, the company crossed the $1-billion milestone in India revenue and is aiming to achieve $2 billion by FY 2018.

Without disclosing the name of the start-up, Bardiya said: “There are two more investments in the pipeline that we should close soon.” This takes Cisco’s investments in Indian start-ups to a total of six over the last 18 months, and with two more in the pipeline, it will take the total tally of investments to eight by the end of the year.

The $49-billion networking giant has already invested in four Indian start-ups over the last two years, namely, Covacsis, Mobstac, Ineda and MobiKwik.

The company’s innovation strategy in India revolves around four pillars – Invest; Acquire; Co-create with start-ups; Co-develop with partners.

While Cisco made its first India acquisition of Bengaluru-headquartered IT security firm Pawaa for an undisclosed amount last October, it has invested in a total of 25 Indian start-ups, some of which are registered abroad, over the last 10 years.

The company’s first attempt at co-creating with start-ups took wings on Thursday, with the announcement of Cisco LaunchPad, an accelerator programme to co-innovate with early to growth stage start-ups.

Partnerships have been forged with companies like Tech Mahindra, Saankhya Labs and industry body Nasscom to co-develop solutions for Utilities, Internet users and Farmers.

Asked if Cisco had identified any start-up to acquire after Pawaa, Bardiya said: “We continue to look for start-ups that are building disruptive solutions that align with Cisco’s business interests.”

Indian solar energy to get $1 bn from World Bank

The World Bank Group signed an agreement with the International Solar Alliance (ISA), consisting of 121 countries, led by India. It has committed to provide $1 billion support to Indian solar energy projects.

The World Bank-supported projects include solar rooftop technology, infrastructure for solar parks, bringing innovative solar and hybrid technologies to market and transmission lines for solar-rich states. The cumulative investment in solar would be the World Bank’s largest financing in this sector for any country.

ISA was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris at end-November last year, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President François Hollande. Through ISA, India aims to collaborate with global agencies and mobilise around $1 trillion of investment in solar energy by 2030.

The agreement was signed for India by Arun Jaitley and Piyush Goyal, the minister of finance and coal, power & renewable energy, respectively, and World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim.

“India’s plans to virtually triple the share of renewable energy by 2030 will both transform the country’s energy supply and have far-reaching global implications in the fight against climate change,” said Jim Yong Kim. He hopes this agreement would spur a global movement.

The World Bank Group will develop a road map to mobilise financing for development and deployment of affordable solar energy, and work with other multilateral development banks and financial institutions to develop financing instruments in this regard.

The World Bank also signed an agreement to give close to $625 million for the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme under the National Solar Mission. The project will finance the installation of around 400 megawatt of solar photovoltaic power projects. The development of a $200-million shared infrastructure for the Solar Parks Project under a public-private partnership model, is also under preparation, said the Bank.

India jumps 19 places in World Bank’s logistics performance index

India’s logistics performance at its key international gateways has improved in the last two years, according to a World Bank report released on Tuesday.

In the World Bank’s biennial measure of international supply chain efficiency, called Logistics Performance Index, India’s ranking has jumped from 54 in 2014 to 35 in 2016.

While Germany tops the 2016 rankings, India is ahead of comparatively advanced economies like Portugal and New Zealand. In 2016, India’s international supply chain efficiency was at 75% of top-ranked Germany, said the report titled Connecting to Compete: 2016 Trade Logistics in the Global Economy. This is an improvement over the 66% efficiency when compared to the leader (again Germany) in 2014.

Better performance in logistics will not only boost programmes, such as Make in India, by enabling India to become part of the global supply chain, it can also help increase trade. In 2015-16, India’s foreign trade shrank by around 15%.

The Logistics Performance Index analyses countries across six components: efficiency of customs and border management clearance, quality of trade and transport infrastructure, ease of arranging competitively priced shipments, competence and quality of logistics services, ability to track and trace consignments, and the frequency with which shipments reach consignees within scheduled or expected delivery times.

It is computed from the survey responses of about 1,051 logistics industry professionals.

Programmes, such as Make in India, and improvements in infrastructure have helped India improve its logistical performance, said Arvind Mahajan, partner and national head (energy, infrastructure and government) at KPMG India, a consultancy. He also said that the emergence of skilled professionals and technological improvements that have enabled services such as track-and-tracing have helped India close the gap with leaders.

That said, Logistics Performance Index does not address how easy or difficult it is to move goods to the hinterland. For that, World Bank has another measure—a domestic LPI which analyzes a country’s performance over four factors: infrastructure, services, border procedures and supply chain reliability.

While not all yardsticks are comparable across countries, there are some which show that India still has some way to go.

For instance, only 69% of shipments from India meet the quality criteria, compared to 72% for China and 77% for Kenya. On the other hand, it takes two and three days to clear shipments, without and with inspection, respectively—numbers comparable to China but longer than what it takes in top-ranked Germany.

Similarly, India has an average of 5 forms required for import or export, compared to 4.5 for China and 2 for Germany.

In this regard, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has the potential to revolutionize the transport industry in India, said Capt. Uday Palsule, former managing director of Spear Logistics Pvt. Ltd. “Inter-state travel time will be drastically reduced if the hurdle of checking documents at every state border is done away with,” he said. It will also help boost the returns of the trucking industry and feed into better performance of the logistics sector, added Palsule.

Abu Dhabi banks in talks to form largest West Asia lender

National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) PJSC and First Gulf Bank (FGB) PJSC said they’re in talks to merge in a deal that would create the largest lender by assets in West Asia.

A working group of senior executives from each bank is reviewing the commercial, structural and legal aspects of a potential transaction, according to a filing to the Abu Dhabi stock exchange on Sunday. Bloomberg News was first to report the two banks were considering a potential merger on June 16.

A deal would create a lender with assets of about $170 billion and mark the first major banking merger in the United Arab Emirates’ since National Bank of Dubai and Emirates Bank International combined to create Emirates NBD PJSC in 2007. The country’s fragmented banking industry is ready for further consolidation and a deal could prompt further mergers among lenders, according to investment bank EFG-Hermes Holding SAE.

“There’s no doubt it will lead to synergies and would give them a competitive edge, considering there are more than 40 banks in the UAE,” Chiradeep Ghosh, a banks’ analyst at Securities & Investment Co in Bahrain, said by phone on Sunday. “The combined entity will have a bigger equity book. That will help them to lend to larger entities and take up a greater share of the syndicated loan book.”

First Gulf Bank could pay a premium of as much as 14 per cent to buy National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Arqaam Capital Ltd said in a note to investors on Thursday. NBAD shares surged 15 per cent on Sunday, the maximum allowed in a day, to 9.2 dirhams as of 10:52 am local time. First Gulf Bank also soared, rising 7.8 per cent to 12.7 dirhams. NBAD is the UAE’s second-biggest bank by assets, while FGB is third-ranked.

A combination would help them overtake Emirates NBD as the country’s largest lender and represent nearly a quarter of the system’s loans and deposits, according to EFG-Hermes.

The UAE is home to about 9 million people and has about 50 banks, including the local units of Citigroup Inc, HSBC Holdings Plc and Standard Chartered Plc. Both NBAD and FGB have pushed to expand in other countries to beat the limitations of a small home market and build investment banking businesses to compete with bigger foreign rivals.

NBAD was the fifth-biggest arranger of syndicated loans in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council last year, while FGB ranked seventh, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. NBAD was also the second-largest arranger of bonds and sukuk sales last year.

The league tables are dominated by foreign lenders including HSBC Holdings Plc, Citigroup Inc and Sumitomo Mitsui.

NBAD, with a market value of about $11.3 billion at the end of Thursday, is 69 per cent owned by sovereign wealth fund Abu Dhabi Investment Council. State-owned investment fund Mubadala Development is the biggest shareholder in FGB, whose market capitalization is $14.4 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The news “was a surprise considering, they have a very contrasting style of management and business strategy,” Ghosh at SICO said. “One is a public-sector focused bank, while FGB is an aggressive private sector bank, with reasonable focus in consumer lending. FGB primarily operates within the UAE, while NBAD is looking to expand outside the UAE.”

Amazon India sees 250% annual growth in sellers

US-based Amazon on Friday said it had witnessed a 250 per cent year-on-year growth in bringing new sellers on board, as it looks to tap into the booming e-commerce market in India.

The company, which is making multi-billion dollar investments in India, has about 85,000 sellers on board.

“We started with 100 sellers three years ago and now we have about 85,000 sellers growing at 250 per cent year-on-year and adding nearly 90,000 products a day,” an Amazon India spokesperson stated.

Amazon, which competes with the likes of Flipkart and Snapdeal, has cut its commissions by 25-30 per cent across categories such as mobile phones, PCs, electronic devices and personal care appliances.

“We think these revised rates can significantly help sellers to perform even better and succeed in their business. In addition, we continue to innovate and offer best in class services such as Fulfilment by Amazon, Easy Ship, Seller Flex, etc, to help them with fulfilment/logistics, so that they can focus on their business,” the Amazon spokesperson said.

Flipkart, on the contrary, had recently increased its commissions across key segments and asked sellers to bear the costs of logistics in case of returns.

Recently, Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos had said the company will invest $3 billion in India. This is in addition to the American e-commerce giant’s $2-billion infusion in 2014, taking its total investments here to over $5 billion.

The funds will be channelled towards enhancing customer and seller experience, Amazon India managing director Amit Agarwal had told PTI.

“India is a key market for Amazon and we will work towards continuing to reduce operating costs for sellers backed by good logistics and fulfilment capabilities,” he had added.

China’s Debt more than GDP

China’s total borrowings were more than double its gross domestic product (GDP) last year, a government economist said, warning that debt linkages between the state and industry could be “fatal” for the world’s second largest economy.

The country’s debt has ballooned as Beijing has made getting credit cheap and easy in an effort to stimulate slowing growth, unleashing a massive debt-fuelled spending binge.

 

While the stimulus may help the country post better growth numbers in the near term, analysts say the rebound might be short-lived.

China’s borrowings hit 168.48 trillion yuan ($25.6 trillion) at the end of last year, equivalent to 249 per cent of the economy’s GDP, Li Yang, a senior researcher with a top government think tank, the China Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), told reporters yesterday.

The number, while enormous, is still lower than some outside estimates.

Consulting firm the McKinsey Group has said that the country’s total debt was likely as high as $28 trillion by mid-2014.

CASS, in a report last year, said China’s debt amounted to 150.03 trillion yuan at the end of 2014, according to previous Chinese media reports.

The most worrying risks lie in the non-financial corporate sector, where the debt-to-GDP ratio was estimated at 156 per cent, including liabilities of local government financing vehicles, Li said.

Many of the companies in question are state-owned firms that borrowed heavily from government-backed banks and so problems with the sector could ultimately trigger “systemic risks” in the economy, he said.

“The gravity of China’s non-financial corporate (debt) is that if problems occur with it, China’s financial system will have problems immediately,” Li said. He added that the problem will also affect state coffers because Chinese banks are “closely linked to the government”.

“It’s a fatal issue in China. Because of such a link, it is probably more urgent for China than other countries to resolve the debt problem,” he said.

Speaking earlier this week, David Lipton, first deputy managing director with the International Monetary Fund, also singled out China’s corporate borrowing as a major concern, warning that addressing the issue is “imperative to avoid serious problems down the road”.

Despite the concerns, China is having difficulty kicking its credit addiction. On Wednesday, the People’s Bank of China announced that new loans extended by banks jumped to 985.5 billion yuan last month, up from 555.6 billion yuan in April.
